Ratcliff developed a
master plan for the Head-Royce School that provides for a realignment of school
programs to add a new 11,000-square-foot gymnasium and adjoining middle school
to the existing school campus. Previously, Ratcliff designed the
15,000-square-foot free-standing lower school building with classrooms, a
six-station computer room, a teachers’ lounge, and a kitchen. The new gymnasium
includes a main court and two cross courts, a full kitchen and food service
area for events, showers, and restrooms. Two outdoor basketball courts and
at-grade parking were also provided. The middle school features two new science
classrooms, a conference room, and a teachers’ administrative space with work
room. The siting and design of the buildings responds to the natural
topography’s steep slope and difficult terrain. Concerns from members of the
adjacent residential neighborhood were addressed at community workshops that
included the joint participation of school faculty, administration, and
neighbors
