UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital | Pediatric Medical Surgery Unit

Ratcliff has designed and orchestrated the conversion of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit into a Pediatric Medical Surgery Unit for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland.  Due to conflicting specific code requirements and existing conditions, obtaining HCAI approval proved to be a challenge. However, the design team was able to clarify intent of use and provide pre-approval in concept from HCAI prior to submitting construction documents. The design concept implements UCSF Interior Design Guidelines for continuity in ongoing facility renovations. Using The Museum of Oakland as the prescribed community-based reference, the design team introduced a visual vocabulary and thematic narrative that enhances patient & staff amenities for well-being, one that reduces stress and maximizes patient comfort & safety. The approach focuses on designing for a diverse patient population with tangible and familiar elements that are kid-friendly and easy to interpret both visually and culturally. Colorful and joyful imagery used in the flooring, walls and furniture are expressed as paint swatches & splotches for wayfinding; and, oversized graphic art accent walls create an engaging, playful environment.
