With a new Medical Surgery Nursing Unit, it became apparent to Kaiser Permanente that the public spaces within their Walnut Creek medical center needed an upgrade. The design concept utilized for the Medical Surgery Nursing Unit is extended here, with the interiors connecting to the surrounding landscape and centering around the client’s ‘Total Health’ design guidelines. Redesigned spaces include the hospital and medical center lobbies, a meditation room, waiting rooms across three floors, the Physical Therapy & Respiratory Therapy departments, and the replacement of all nurse stations. The color palette is a juxtaposition of vibrant greens and muted neutrals—inspired by the verdant hills of Mount Diablo throughout the seasons. A modern feel is achieved through bold geometries and the manipulation of interior light. With the intent to add vibrancy and a fresh new look, these projects serve as a prototype for future upgrades.
